It was a stormy weekend for high school football last week as most games in the area were pushed back to Saturday thanks to an abundance of lightning on Friday night. It was rather stormy in the RCN/NKYSports.com Top-5 Poll as well as one team has fallen from the list altogether. Week 4 promises to be another interesting set of games that will help define the regions football landscape even clearer.
Our top team, Simon Kenton, continues to pour on the offensive display as the Pioneers put up 50 points or more for the third consecutive week after thrashing Conner 54-0 last week. SK has been powered behind the legs of running back Dillan Powell who has put up monster numbers in the early going of the season. Powell had 169 yards and three more rushing touchdowns against the Cougars last week and now has eight on the year. This week, the Pioneers set their sights on Dixie, a team that crushed their championship aspirations a year ago with two tough losses to the Colonels including a shutout in the playoffs that ended the Simon Kenton this season.
Earlier in the off season, head coach Jeff Marksberry said that his team was not too concerned about payback to Dixie.
“Our kids do a really good job of not looking ahead and not looking behind,” he said. “They’ve done a really good job of focusing on the task at hand and trying to get better every day. That’s what we preach to them. I don’t think revenge is on our minds. It was very painful last year to lose to them twice, especially in the third round of the playoffs, but they had a great team and played better than us on both those nights. Our kids will be excited to play them like they are in every game.”
The second team on last week’s poll fared much worse in Week 3 as Cooper was blanked by Bryan Station 36-0 in Lexington. By comparison, Simon Kenton beat Bryan Station a week prior, 52-35. It was the first loss of the year for the Jaguars but an awfully decisive one nonetheless. Cooper has a good chance to bounce back this week, though, as they host Campbell County who is winless thus far this year.
