2016 Bishop Brossart Football
8/9/2016 - by Ray Donnelly
The 2016 Bishop Brossart Mustangs will attempt to build on the success of their 2015 campaign, which saw them post a 9-2 record. Though losing several key contributors to graduation, third-year head coach Paul Wiggins (10-10) expects returning talent along with additional depth to allow his team to continue its winning ways. "We did lose talent but we have kids with valuable experience to keep the building blocks moving upward," Wiggins stated.

Senior leadership will again be essential if the Mustangs are to achieve their goals. Offensively, Chase Keller is expected to assume quarterback duties while fellow seniors Matt Blank and Jake Martin will be called on to anchor the line on both sides of the ball. Both Blank and Martin may well have an opportunity to play football at the next level. Nolan Verst and Brad Moore will be two of the primary ball carriers in a contentious Mustang backfield. Junior Bryce Donnelly and newcomer Jake Sendelbach will likely be among Keller's favorite targets downfield.

Brossart's defense was the stingiest in all of Class 1A last year (13.6 ppg) and replacing several starters from that squad may prove to be the Mustang's biggest challenge this season. Hard-hitting senior lb/db Derek Schadler will be a key ingredient while senior Kory Quitter will be a primary pass rusher and may be placed in a variety of roles along the front seven.

With a solid nucleus of returning players and talented newcomers ready to leave their mark, Brossart is looking forward to another exciting season.

The Mustangs will open the season at Dayton on August 19.

Several special events will highlight Mustang home games, including Breast Cancer Awareness night and Local Hero night.
