After becoming just the 6th public school in Girls' 9th Region All ďAĒ Regional history to advance to the championship game, the Bellevue Lady Tigers realized the glass slipper didnít quite fit as they fell to the Newport Central Catholic Lady Breds 65-53 on Saturday, and NewCath advances to the All ďAĒ State Tournament for the first time since 2003.
Both teams came out of the gate early, scoring basket after basket. In the first five minutes, the Tigers led 16-12 behind eight quick points from Senior Mindy Merritt and 3-pointers by Senior Mallory Reynolds and Junior Caitlyn Haynes.
After falling behind early, the Breds put pressure on the ball forcing 21 turnovers in the game and only allowing Merritt four more shots in the game, who finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Lady Breds were led by Tournament MVP Shannon Klei, as she scored 19 of her 20 points in the first half. Freshman Courtney Sandfoss also added 13 points for the Lady Breds. NewCath advances to play Harlan on January 31 at Eastern Kentucky University.
