Newport, KY - Earlier this season NewCath had defeated Highlands 63-57, but no one expected the 'Breds to defeat the 'Birds 76-54 in the 36th District Championship game Saturday evening.
Highlands got off to a good start and led most of the first half. NewCath took their first lead of the game with only 4 seconds remaining in the half but Zac Lother answered with a buzzer-beating three pointer to put Highlands up 27-25.
Then the barrage of NewCath three pointers started! The Breds outscored Highlands 27-6 in the 3rd quarter as Grant Pangallo and Jeramie Conner started hitting three after three. At one point, it seemed like every three pointer NewCath put up would go in. It was just there night.
Highlands tried to put some pressure on NewCath in the 4th quarter but they couldn't muster a comeback as the Breds took care of the ball and continued their hot shooting of the three.
So now, NewCath and Highlands will await their next opponent as the 9th Region draw will take place on Sunday (March 1). NewCath's win assures them of not having to play the top ranked teams Holmes and Boone County. They will face either Beechwood, Dixie or Ryle in the first round of the 9th Region tournament, while Highlands will draw either Holmes, Boone County or St. Henry.
