Boone County and Highlands Advance

The 9th Region boys began their tournament play Wednesday as Boone County defeated Beechwood 59-52, and Highlands beat St. Henry 71-52.

In the first game, the #1 ranked Rebels found themselves down 17-14 after the first quarter to the #6 ranked Tigers. Brian Romes was the main threat for Beechwood in the first scoring 8 points. But Boone County bounced back in the 2nd quarter by out scoring Beechwood 21-12 giving them a 35-29 half-time lead. One area that hurt the Tigers in the first half was free throws going 0 for 5.

In the second half the teams battled back-and-forth with no lead getting over 7 points. Beechwood was only down 55-52 with 1:20 left but couldn't muster anymore offense, and the Tigers finished 2 of 10 from the charity stripe. The Rebels were 8 of 10 from the free throw line.

Boone County was led by Steve McFarland with 18 points and Mike Gabbard scoring 11. Beechwood was led by Trey Beuttel scoring 15 points, and Brian Romes with 13.

In the second match-up, St. Henry got off to a good start and led after the first quarter 14-11. Highlands countered with a better second quarter and took a 28-27 lead into the half-time locker room. Highlands' center, Tyler Grubbs, was a big factor for the 'Birds offense in the first half scoring 10 points. Cameron Speed led the Crusaders at the half with 12 points.

In the third quarter, Stephen Kowolonek started getting hot scoring 9 of his game-high 24 points. But, St. Henry stayed close and was only down 51-45 going into the 4th quarter. In the fourth quarter, Highlands pulled away outscoring St. Henry 20-7 as the Bluebirds kept making their shots while the Crusaders couldn't convert in the paint or from the outside.

Stephen Kowolonek led the Bluebirds with 24 points and Tyler Grubbs followed with 21. Cameron Speed led St. Henry with 15 points.

Boone County and Highlands will face each other on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM.
