Wildcats Take Division for Second Straight Year
10/29/2005 - by Nathan Eten
Newport was scheduled to take on Lloyd on their homefield, but that was changed and the Wildcats (9-1) would take their business to Cecil Stadium in Ft. Thomas, home of the Highlands Bluebirds. Scoring would happen early and often.

It started out in the first quarter when Newport would be first to strike the endzone. The Wildcats would take a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. Lloyd would react and counter that TD and score one of their own to tie the score at 7-7. This game was an offensive game from the start. Later, in the first quarter Lloyd would take the lead on a quarterback keeper by Jeremy Addington. Addington made great plays all night long for the Juggernauts and Lloyd went into the second quarter with a 14-7 lead.

In the second quarter, Newport would answer back. It was a toss to runningback James Glenn, who had a phenomenal night, but unfortunately would leave the game with a knee injury. This drive was set up by great plays by J.J. Hesch. the quarterback, and runningback Ryne Wilfong. After the Newport TD, Lloyd would try to put up more points on the board. Addington would throw a beauty to his WR Brandon Casey for a good gain and on the ensuing play another strike, this time for a TD to WR Charles Johnson. Lloyd 21-14. However, Newport wasn't about to give up. Their drive was led by QB J.J. Hesch, who would slam his way into Lloyd's LB Matt Brosious for a short gain. Ryne Wilfong would take it inside the redzone and Newport would score on the next play on another toss to James Glenn, his second TD of the ballgame. Late in the second it was tied 21-21. It would stay the same going into halftime.

In the third quarter, the scoring continued. It was Newport who would take the lead back late in the quarter. Wilfong led the drive toward the endzone and it was capped off by a TD from James Glenn, his third of the game. Wildcats jump out to a 28-21 lead at the end of the third.
After that, it was the Juggernauts turn to show some offense. Addington connected with Shawn Zitt for a big gain. Addington would take it from there a couple plays later and put Lloyd right back into the game, 28-28. From here it would get very exciting as both teams would tack on another seven points. Newport's score would come from RB Ryne Wilfong. Newport. 35, Lloyd 28. Next drive, Addington hooked up with Brandon Casey for another big gain. It was Addington who would keep the ball himself and take it into the endzone for the TD. Lloyd was back in it, 35-35.

This game would not be completed in four quarters and have to go into overtime. Newport took the ball first and with their four downs were able to score on a TD by Wilfong. So, Lloyd would have to score if they wanted to win this game. They would have the same set of four downs to match Newport's TD. It wouldn't happen though. Newport would hang on, it was a pass on fourth down into the endzone by Addington that was picked off by Newport's Chase Barger.

So, Newport (9-1) wins this great football game and wins the division for a second straight year. It was their first under head coach John Schlarman. Lloyd (4-6) will continue their season next week as they head into the playoffs.
