Coach Jeff Marksberry starts his 16th year as head coach of the Pioneers (100-74). He's taken his team to the Quarterfinals the past 3 years as they look to get over that hump. Last year's record was 11-2 and they were knocked off by Dixie 24-0 in the Class 6A Quarterfinal playoffs.
Simon Kenton returns 11 starters, 5 offensive and 6 defensive. The key returns on offensive include QB Cam Racke, OL David Sandlin, RB Dillon Powell, WR Logan Scott and WR Logan Kreidenweis. On defense the key returns are DB Trent Kincaid, DB Jacob Harney, LB Dalton Finnell, DB Taylor Galbraith, DL Tucker Mueller, and DL Blake Powell.
Offensively the Pioneers return 1 starting offensive linemen. He is a good one but only one. Simon Kenton will have some new faces up front but they expect a solid group with great size. Sophomore OL Colton Williams will be a very good player for the Pioneers. Junior QB Cam Racke has had 1 year in the offense as a starter. He really blossomed as a sophomore and SK will need him to be in command of the offense this year. He has 1 proven WR to throw the ball to but they feel like they have other quality WR to put around him. He is a great athlete and they expect him to be an elite QB. SK thinks their run game will be a strength of their offense this year. SK has a proven RB in senior Dillon Powell. Dillon has had a great off-season and is bigger and stronger. The Pioneers hope this will help him endure the rigors of a tough schedule. Overall, their group of receivers is shaping up nicely. They have good depth there. They also have a couple of other running backs they feel really good about. Simon Kenton should have the ability to have a productive offense that should be able to run and pass equally well.
Simon Kenton returns solid defensive lineman in Tucker Mueller and Blake Powell. These two should be able to help a talented, but inexperienced group of linebackers gain confidence and develop. Their secondary returns three starters that all had very good years in 2014. They are led by Jacob Harney and Trent Kincaid. The overall strength of SK's defense should lie in their defensive line. The Pioneers have good depth in several key areas on defense including D-Line. They have been a solid defensive team for the past few seasons and hope to improve on their defensive numbers in 2015.
After finishing 11-2 in 2014 Simon Kenton will look to compete at a high level again in 2015. The Pioneers have a team full of hard-working, committed players that expect to win football games. Their schedule is tough opening the season against 2A Christian Academy-Louisville (10-2). Several of their athletes have had great off-seasons and will look to lead them this season. They are bigger and stronger. SK has great team chemistry and their kids know the road is not easy. They have set goals for their team and are working to achieve them. Their district competition will be as tough as ever. Campbell County and Boone County will both be ready to contend for the district title as always. Ryle returns many good players and will be a good team. The Simon Kenton players have high expectations and are working very hard to reach their goals. They will continue to work hard on their special teams to give their playmakers another opportunity to score and to help their offense and defense in terms of field position. The Simon Kenton schedule is challenging so they must be ready to compete with their “A game” each week. The Pioneers must get their inexperienced players ready to play. SK looks forward to the challenges of the 2015 season.
