The Northern Kentucky Norse High School Varsity Hockey team are the 2017 Kentucky High School Hockey League State Champions! The team is comprised of student athletes from multiple area schools. Seeded #1 and undefeated in regular season league play, the Norse defeated the Dunbar Bulldogs, 8-0, and defending state champs, the Owensboro Rampage, 3-1, to earn their spot in the final on Sunday in Owensboro. Trailing the Trinity Shamrocks 1-0 at the start of the 3rd period, the Norse roared back and won the championship game with a score of 5-1.
The 2017 Kentucky All State Teams were announced at the championships, and the Norse were well represented. Captain forward, Parker Smith was named to the 1st Team and forward Joshua Roesel was named to the 2nd Team. All State Honorable Mentions were awarded to alternate captain forward, John Hooper; alternate captain defenseman, Jacob Detwiler; defenseman, Kyle Taylor; and goalie, Theran Bowra.
The Norse played in both the Kentucky High School and Cincinnati High School leagues this season. The team finished in first place in both leagues with a record of 41 Wins and 16 losses, including non-league games. The team has gained a reputation for its high powered offense, scoring 297 goals for an average of 5.21 goals per game. The defense was equally impressive, allowing only 2.54 goals per game, with the goalies recording a staggering 14 shutouts.
The Norse are coached by co-head coaches, Bob Bove and Jaime Antelo; defensive coach, Jeff Bove; and goalies coach, Andrew McGinnis. The team manager is Carrie Antelo, and the team mom is Heather Struck. The team plays for the Northern Kentucky Youth Hockey Association.
