Schneider's Breds defeat Pikeville |
|
8/21/2005 - by Nathan Eten |
|
It was a beautiful night in Pikeville, until the rain began to fall. NewCath was on the field warming up, but soon after lightning struck. The game between the Pikeville Panthers and Newport Catholic Thoroughbreds would have to wait another 30 minutes.
Kickoff took place around 10:15pm, almost two hours after it was regularly scheduled.
NewCath got off to a slow start offensively, but was soon ignited by running back Michael Vicars, who made a great cutback for his first touchdown of the season. He would finish the night with two touchdowns and 120+ yards rushing. Another standout for the Breds was starting quarterback, Sam Diehl, who threw two touchdown passes.
Pikeville's offense did not amass more than 50 yards due to a strong NewCath defense led by senior Justin Smith and junior Zach Kiernan.
The victory brought NewCath's Coach Bob Schneider two games closer to tying the all-time winningest high school coach in Kentucky, Joe Jaggers. At midnight the final score was NewCath 37 and Pikeville 6.
