1) 5A Covington Catholic (5-0) – The Colonels had to dig down and show their mettle after the 1st quarter against Beechwood, and they faced a similar situation, heading into halftime tied at 14 with OH-DIII St. Francis DeSales (3-2) before pulling ahead in the second half to win 35-14 up in Columbus. RB Casey McGinness had another great performance, rushing for 194yds and 2 TDs, and QB Caleb Jacob was 8-17 passing for 88yds and 1 TD. WR Jack Coldiron led the receiving corps with 56yds receiving and 1 TD, and the other TD’s were scored on short runs by Jacob and RB Daniel Felix. McGinness also subbed in on defense for the Colonels to provide a clutch 4th quarter interception with a 60yd return, while LB Michael Mayer had 10 tackles with 1 tackle for loss, and Dan Felix added on 9 more tackles with 2 for losses. Covington Catholic is on their bye week this week, and will play IN-3A Bishop Chatard on the road on October 5th.
2) 5A Highlands (5-1) – The Birds had their 4th win this season over a 6A competitor on Friday with a 38-9 victory over 6A Simon Kenton (5-1), and also cemented their spot as the #2 team in the NKY Power Rankings. The game started off with an opening kickoff return for TD by Brycen Huddleston.
