EDGEWOOD - A Bethany touchdown with 59 seconds remaining lifted the Bisons to the upset victory over Thomas More Saturday, 21-17.
Thomas More raced out to a 14-0 lead on two rushing touchdowns by quarterback Trevor Stellman (Burlington/Conner). The defense was its usual stout self in the first half, holding BC to just 41 yards in the first half.
However, things changes following the break.
Using a short passing attack, the Bisons drove 62 yards on eight plays for its first score of the game. After forcing a three-and-out, Bethany took just two plays to drive 45 yards for the tying score.
The Saints wasted no time in reclaiming the lead as they drove down for a 23 yard field goal by sophomore David Sheeley (Fairdale/Fairdale).
Bethany answered on its ensuing drive but they had its 23 yard field goal attempt clang off the crossbar.
Thomas More had a chance to ice the game and had drove 45 yards in nearly six minutes. The drive exausted the BC timeouts, and the Saints were one first down from putting the game away.
But, Stellman fumbled on a third down play giving the visitors life. And they capitalized with the game-winning score.
Senior receiver Austin Vogt (Erlanger/Lloyd Memorial) ran for 92 yards on 16 carries. It was his first-ever collegiate appearance as a running back, while sophomore running back Zach Martin (Burlington/Conner) rushed for 71 yards on 17 carries.
Stellman finished 6-of-18 for 76 yards and two interceptions.
Senior Mark Carlisle (Canal Winchester, OH/Bloom Carroll) had a game-high 14 tackles.
Thomas More (5-3 overall, 2-3 PAC) will travel to Washington & Jefferson Saturday.
