Simon Kenton to Host Holmes in Critical AAAA Game |
|
9/29/2005 - by Unknown |

Both Simon Kenton and Holmes are coming off devastating losses last week. Both teams looked to stay undefeated in the wacky Northern Kentucky AAAA district. However, that didn't happen, with Simon Kenton losing a tough one to county rival Dixie 14-10, and the Bulldogs falling 41-7 to district favorite Ryle.
In a true battle of contrasting styles of play, the Pioneers will looked to grind out long drives running the ball, while Holmes will see if there big play offense can start lighting off more fireworks.
So far this season Simon Kenton has relied heavily on the running prowess of Brent Bishop and Josh Larkins, who so far this season have both racked up big numbers in leading the Pioneers to a 3-2 start. Senior quarterback Josh Elbert has not been asked to pass much this year in the 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense, but when he does his completion percentage is one of the highest in NKY.
The Bulldogs are very reliant on first year quarterback Duran Jefferson, the star of last year's basketball team that one the region. In their new option offense Jefferson has had big nights under the helm, highlighted by the Conner game in which he had over 200 yards running and 2 touchdowns, and over 170 yards passing and 2 touchdowns. Outside of Jefferson, the Bulldogs have four running backs who split time in the two and three back sets, Rodney Covington, B.J. Avery, Tim German, and Rashaad Palmer. Covington and Avery seem to get the tough yards, and German and Palmer are seen as the big play threats. When the Bulldogs go to the air, Jefferson's favorite targets are wide receiver Austin Hill, tight end drew scales, and Palmer out of the backfield. In the teams first five games, Hill has four touchdowns.
Defensively both teams are near the top in NKY with Simon Kenton allowing a little under 200 yard per game and Holmes allowing just over the 200 mark.
Both teams need to win to get a little cushion in the playoff race, while the loser may be on the inside looking out. The Pioneers and Bulldogs both come into the game with a 1-1 district record. Holmes still has Boone County and Dixie left to play while the Pioneers must face Conner and Ryle. Both teams also have Campbell County and Scott left to tangle with. Expect a close game as Dave Trosper leads his Bulldogs into Independence Friday night to take on Jeff Marksberry's Pioneers.
