With three local teams making the trip south many were feeling pretty good about an area team being named state champs. Newport Central Catholic saw both its girls and boys teams as well as Bishop Brossart’s boys advance to state in the All A Classic.
Bishop Brossart faced West Carter in the first round. Coming out on fire Brossart held a commanding 34-19 lead. However, the lead slipped away and the game went into overtime. The overtime period showed the Mustangs had simply run out of gas. West Carter won the game 75-69. Sophomore Forward Justin Sanders led the ‘Stangs with 29 points. This marked Brossart’s 8th appearance in 9 seasons in the All A State Tournament.
The NewCath Boys rolled through the first round of the tournament with an easy 44-31 victory over University Heights. Picked as the favorites going into the tournament the team knew it had much to live up to. The Breds faced DeSales in the second round of the tournament where they met their match. With a barrage of 3 pointers falling for DeSales NewCath didn’t stand a chance in this one 67-43. This was the first game of the season that the Thoroughbreds gave up over 60 points. DeSales was last years All A State runner up.
The NewCath Girls matched the boys winning easily in the first round 67-47 over Danville. The win had the defending state champs feeling good about their chances in this year’s tournament. NewCath faced Monroe County in the semifinals. The Thoroughbreds press was broke easily by Monroe County who also out rebounded the Breds 47 to 28. This proved to be too much for NCC who lost 54-50. Nicole Kernana paced NewCath with 13 points and 7 rebounds.
