Northern Kentucky basketball has seen another exciting season. However, this year there seems to be no clear cut favorite to represent the 9th region. In years past there has generally been one or two teams that have dominated the area. This season has shown everybody is vulnerable and anybody can win on a given night.
The current top five boy’s basketball teams in Northern Kentucky are Dixie, Newport Catholic, Holmes, Boone County, and Ryle. While Dixie has been impressive all year and staying as a top team they have lost games to #3 Holmes and #7 Scott. NewCath, being the smallest school out of the top five has held there own against the big boys, defeating top 10 teams; Ryle, Holmes, and Highlands. Holmes despite a new coach and new stars filling in has played like they belong. However, they have lost games to NCC, Ryle, and Boone County. The last two teams Boone County and Ryle, have also battled close with top 10 teams. Moving into the district tournaments, it looks to be an exciting time with no clear-cut favorite.
On the girls side of local basketball, it is a little more settled, with three teams battling at the top. The current coach’s poll has Ryle at #1 followed by Boone County and Newport Catholic. Ryle has beaten Boone but has lost games to top ten teams NewCath and Highlands. Boone County, who beat Newport Catholic, has faired well against all local teams they have faced besides Ryle. The 33rd district will be a chance for Boone County to show they belong. They face a possible match up in the championship game against Ryle.
