The state tournament is a once in a lifetime chance, no one knows this better than the Dixie Colonels. 1957 was the last time the school made an appearance in the Boys Basketball State Tournament. A span of 54 years has brought incredible support for the Colonels from many in the area. With an impressive 29-3 record, at times Dixie has looked unstoppable. They will face a tough match-up tonight against Lexington Catholic. The Knights, playing in their hometown, use a unique press style that has caused many teams trouble this year. Lexington Catholic has made 3 state tournament appearances. In 2002, the team was crowned state champs and finished #10 in the nation. Dixie hopes to break the Knights pressure with their two versatile guards Matt Trammel and Brandon Hatton. If the Colonels are able to handle the pressure they should be able to come out on top.
The Newport Catholic girl’s basketball team represented the 9th region in this year’s girl’s state tournament facing Calloway County. Starting off 22-12 the Breds looked to be in control until they went on an 8 minute scoreless streak. Calloway County’s zone bothered the Thoroughbreds forcing 22 turnovers. At the end of regulation the game was tied 53 all. On NewCath’s first three possessions of overtime they turned the ball over. A disappointing final Calloway County won 62-57. The Breds were led by Senior Hannah Thiem who had 18 points; Freshman Nicole Kiernan had 17 points and 11 rebounds. The girls 9th region is 1 of 4 to never win a state championship in basketball.
