Breds lose to Pleasure Ridge Park 10-4
NewCath vs Pleasure Ridge Park Video Webcast Replay
The Thoroughbreds of Newport Central Catholic are hot and just at the right time. On Tuesday the Breds began their 2011 State Tournament berth against Lawrence County at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington. The game faced two of the states top pitching prospects, Jake Cain and Chandler Shepherd.
Jake Cain of NewCath has put together quite a season and has signed with Northern Kentucky University for next year. Meanwhile, Lawrence County countered with Chandler Shepherd. In addition to being a University of Kentucky signee, Shepherd was drafted in the 41st round of this years MLB Draft.
Despite the big name match-up, neither pitcher was a factor for his team. Cain lasted only two innings after being injured, meanwhile Shepherd pitched an inning and 2/3 giving up 7 runs. All of NewCath’s 7 runs came with 2 outs and all were unearned. Two Breds, Jr. Nick Wolterman and Sr. Vance Sullivan, had 4 RBI days to help the Thoroughbreds. Sr. Brian Doyle came into the game in the 3rd and pitched 3 solid innings only yielding 3 runs. This was not the game many expected with the final, NewCath 13 Lawrence County 3 in 6 innings.
The second round of the tournament will pit Newport Central Catholic against Pleasure Ridge Park on Thursday night. PRP, the #9 ranked team in the state, defeated #1 Lexington Catholic 6-5 on Tuesday to advance. NewCath will send Sr. Vance Sullivan, 6-2 4.03 ERA, to the mound Thursday.
