Newport, KY - It was a frigid night as Newport Central Catholic hosted the Somerset Briar Jumpers at Newport Stadium. These two teams were one game away from the championship game and after four quarters of play, the winner was NewCath. NewCath would prove to Somerset that they were the team that belonged in the Championship game that will be played at Papa John’s Stadium in Louisville next week.
Both teams coming into the game had highly charged offenses; NewCath had their big three in quarterback Sam Diehl, wide receiver Josh Canafax, and runningback Michael Vicars. Somerset countered their three with three outstanding players of their own in quarterback Ross Deaton, wide receiver John Cole, and runningback Scott Newell.
It was Somerset who took the ball to begin the game, but were unable to score on their first drive, however, NewCath would go in a different direction. It was Michael Vicars who took five carries to start the game, two of them for twenty yards or more and one that went for a 21 yard TD. Vicars came up big in this game for the ‘Breds as he rushed 28 times for 220 yards with 3 TD’s. NewCath took the lead 7-0 after the XP by Scott Gesenhues. Somerset would try to recover from NewCath’s first blow, but came up short after a great drive led by quarterback Ross Deaton. Deaton had a nice passing night on the game throwing for 193 yards. On this drive, he would hook up for a big gain with wide receiver Ray Norman. The Jumpers would have to settle for a FG from John Wright Polk and they put their first three points on the board. NewCath led 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.
The defense that NewCath had on this night was outstanding. The ‘Breds were led by their DE Justin Smith, who was all over the field tearing down the Somerset offensive players. Smith was not alone though, he was being backed up by DE Bob Schneider who took advantage of Zach Kiernan’s absence. Schneider played a great game on the defensive side and added a couple sacks to his resume. Also, DB Scott Gesenhues had a great game batting any ball down that came his way in the secondary. It would be two more quarters until the Briar Jumpers would score again on the NewCath defense. NewCath would support their great defense by scoring plenty more, this time it was Nic Wrobleski, who pounded his way in for the TD to put NewCath up 14-3. It was obvious early, that NewCath knew what was at stake in this game.
The ‘Breds would continue to play great defense and their offense did not leave them hanging scoring a couple of unanswered touchdowns. Sam Diehl threw the ball just ten times, but connected on six of those, three to Canafax and three to Gesenhues. Diehl would end the game with 95 yards through the air. The next touchdown would be scored by the Thoroughbreds, Scott Gesenhues who had 62 yards on the night and gave NewCath a 21-3 lead. The Jumpers did not answer back with a touchdown of their own until late in the fourth quarter after Michael Vicars ran wild all over the Briar Jumpers. Vicars had two touchdowns late that put the nail in the coffin for the ‘Breds. The Jumpers scored their only TD of the game off of a run from their quarterback Ross Deaton. When the clock stopped at the end of the fourth quarter the score read 35-10 in favor of the NewCath Thoroughbreds.
The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds would win their third bid to go to the Class ‘A’ State Finals. Coach Bob Schneider would get his 301st win on his career and a chance to win his first state title since 1984 when his team defeated #1 ranked Somerset in Class 'AA'. After the game, Coach Schneider was seen walking to his vehicle, trophy in hand, as he had nothing but good things to say about his football team's play on this Friday night. NewCath will play against pre-season favorite Mayfield on Saturday, December 3rd, at Papa John's Stadium. Kickoff will be around 7:30 p.m.
