A View From the Press Box |

As the weather finally turns to traditional football weather, the action is heating up like an August Day! Each week, I enjoy the view from the press box and football being played before my eyes. I can not help to wonder how the season might have been different if:
Dixie wasn’t ranked #2 in the preseason coaches poll. Would they have played more inspired football without the pressure of being ranked behind one of the best in the state or in the country for that matter? Loosing many key weapons on offense throughout the season is to take some of the blame, but that doesn’t make up for a lack of team defense. Yes, Zeke Pike, is one of the best quarterbacks in the area but he doesn’t play defense. You can’t go into every week hoping that your offense is your best defense. With that said, they still are alive for a home playoff game and the number two seed going into the playoff run. (They need to beat Ryle tonight) Live on NKYSports.com at 7PM as part of the Republic Bank Game of the Week.

Ryle, Ryle, Ryle. Where to start? Loosing talented running back, Travis Elliot, was a major blow to this team but head coach, Bryson Warner, did a great job of refocusing his team and playing excellent football going into last weekend. Then Campbell County came to town and took the district crown right off the Raiders!
Campbell County. What if they found their offense before district play? The change at quarterback has really jump started the sluggish Camels. They have found something that is working for them at the right time of the season. Going into district play without a win on the stat sheet and pulling off the district title is pretty much amazing! And to think some Camel fans were doubting first year head coach, Steven Lickert, after the rough start. In my humble eyes, he should be up for coach of the year.
Cooper! Great job in handling your district foes and finding some type of offense that works and works well! Enough said on Cooper.
Newport Central Catholic. Great team that is led by one of the best athletes in Northern Kentucky, and one of the best coaches in Northern Kentucky. NewCath still needs to take care of business against Holy Cross before they can claim the district crown but with that offense, Holy Cross is in for a tough battle. Don’t rule out the upset. Holy Cross is scoring points at will and their defense is stepping up and stopping their opponents.
NewCath needs to focus on Holy Cross and avoid looking ahead to the match up with Beechwood in two weeks.
Finally, Highlands. Patrick Towles is putting up numbers that many have not seen since Madden was introduced to the world! He is only playing a few quarters a game and has the stats to start at the University of Kentucky right now! They play Elder tonight and that is not going to be an easy task. Yes, Elder is down this year but they are still Elder. Highlands will win but the starters will need to play all four quarters to get it done in Price Hill.
In my next rant, I am going to be ranking the best places in Northern Kentucky to watch a high school game. My top picks are going to surprise you! Send me your suggestions at [email protected] to see if they are added to the list of the great venues in and around NKY. Be sure to catch the Republic Bank Game of the Week tonight at 7PM as Dixie will host Ryle for a very important district game. Catch it live, with video, on NKYSports.com.
