NewCath takes first Class 'A' State Title
12/4/2005 - by Nathan Eten
Louisville, KY- It was a bright night under the Saturday lights at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky, as the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds defeated the Mayfield Cardinals by the score of 42-7. NewCath proved to be dominate at the start of this game and in the end proved to be the best team in Class 'A'.

In the first quarter, NewCath would score three unanswered touchdowns under the guidance of senior quarterback Sam Diehl. Diehl would start in the first quarter by driving the Breds 75 yards on 7 plays and connecting with Scott Gesenhues for a 16 yard touchdown pass. That touchdown would put NewCath on the board with six points, seven when Gesenhues kicked the ball throught the uprights. NewCath kept up its air assault on the Cardinals in the first quarter, this time with Kevin Bueter catching a 66 yard bomb from Diehl after Bueter beat Mayfield's Fred Brown, who was on coverage. NewCath moved out ahead early 14-0. The scoring fest would not stop though, but this time the score would not come from Sam Diehl's arm or Michael Vicars legs. It was an outstanding punt return by Josh Canafax, the return would go for 54 yards and put NewCath ahead 21-0 with thirty-four seconds left on the clock.

In the second quarter the scoring wouldn't be as heavy. NewCath's defense made sure that the Cardinals would not score in this game. Their defense was led by Brandon Kohrs who had 9 tackles on the game to go along with an interception. Another defensive leader for the Breds was Justin Smith who had 4 tackles on the game, but kept Mayfield's quarterback, Adam Shelton in check the whole game. The Breds would get the ball back with 8:07 left in the second quarter, where they would score again. On a 14 play 93 yard drive led by Diehl, NewCath's runningback Michael Vicars proved that his 220 yards last week was no fluke. He rushed well during the game, but was held to 87 yards on the ground. It was Diehl himself, who would take it in for six after a 3 yard run, on this drive for NCC. NewCath now led 28-0. That was the last scoring drive of the half and going into halftime the Breds were two quarters away from getting their revenge on Mayfield, who beat them in the Class 'AA' title games in 85' and 86'.

At the start of the third quarter, NewCath would take the football. On this possession they would go 56 yards downfield and Sam Diehl would throw a strike to Scott Gesenhues for a 35 yard touchdown. It was Gesenhues' second touchdown on the night for the Breds. In the third quarter, NewCath's defense would not let up, not allowing Mayfield to get into the endzone. Kevin Bueter played great coverage throughout the night and came away with an interception after Mayfield's Adam Shelton threw a misguided pass. The Breds would take a huge lead going into the fourth quarter, 35-0.

Now it was do or die for the Cardinals as they would try to put some points onto the board to prevent the shut-out. They wouldn't be shut out, but they weren't the next team to score early in the fourth. It was the standout quarterback, Diehl, who would pick up his third passing touchdown of the game as he hit Brandon Kohrs at the corner of the endzone for a 32 yard score. Gesenhues would kick the plus one and put NewCath way ahead 42-0. At this point the celebration on NewCath's side was started. Mayfield would counter Kohr's touchdown with one of their own. It was a 12 play, 89 yard drive, that was capped off on a 1 yard Josh Hachell run. Mayfield was finally on the board, but a little too late for the Cards. As the clock ticked toward the final seconds the scoreboad would read 42-7 and NewCath was going to win its first Class 'A' State Title.

The Breds played tremendous football all night long and were by far the best team on the football field. Bob Schneider would win his second state title, but this time it would be a little sweeter for the Hall of Fame coach, as the Breds allowed him to breathe easy with those 21 first quarter points. His team would finish the season with a 13-2 record and the Class 'A' state trophy.
