9th REGION SHOWDOWN |
|
1/27/2012 - by Jordan Fugate |

Growing up in Northern Kentucky with a love for high school basketball, it seemed as if it were unspoken knowledge that the two teams you “secretly” never wanted to face were the Dixie Colonels and the Holmes Bulldogs. No matter what year it was, these two teams were the so called “bullies” of the 9th region and had no problem running the scoreboard up with ease on most teams. And when then Colonels and the Bulldogs collide Tuesday January 31st, it might turn out to be one of the best high school games I have seen the past couple of years. It is no wonder why the Republic Bank Game of the Week will be this match up.
According to a Kentucky.com coach’s poll earlier this season, the No. 1 team in the 9th Region is Dixie Heights followed by No. 2 Holmes. Dixie (13-7) has walked away this year with wins over Newport Central Catholic and Lexington Catholic, while Holmes (16-4) has notable wins against Covington Catholic and Holy Cross.
Don’t let the Colonels record fool you. Yeah, the 7 losses may look a little unpleasant or inferior to Holmes’ 4 losses, but there is a reason for that. Dixie’s Head Coach Ken Chevalier had what I like to call an “Izzo” motive behind his schedule this past holiday break, schedule difficult teams so that your players can learn and grow. The Colonels had a tough road trip in which they lost five straight, four of those games by 4 pts or less, having to play some of the top high school teams from the East in the King of the Bluegrass tournament (Fairdale, Ky) and the Stop DWI Holiday Classic. (Binghamton, NY) After their return home Dixie has won 7 out of their last 8 games including a big 66-61 win over Lakota West in the Bluegrass-Buckeye Classic.
As for Holmes, what can I really say? They are having a dominant season so far despite injuries and all the traveling they have done. Jason Booher’s squad has been playing like men this season, not to mention that pounding they handed out to Newport with a 101-53 win; sorry Wildcats don’t take it personally.
Neither one of these 9th Region monsters has a heavy advantage on Tuesday. Whether Holmes thinks it or not, they are not going to be able to just walk into Dixie’s house and get an easy W. The Bulldogs couldn’t even expect that if the Colonels weren’t No. 1 in the 9th Region, have you been to a game there? Their student section makes sure when you step in the gym that you can’t hear yourself think. Holmes is hoping to copy the Lady’s Bulldog team and come away with a win at Dixie this year.
P.S. Holmes, I am definitely a fan of the new uniforms this season and for that I’ll give you a W.
Some notable players this game to keep a BIG eye on are: Brandon Hatton, (Dixie) Dontel Rice, (Holmes) and Parker Stansberry (Dixie).
