2012 Baseball Previews
3/21/2012 - by Jordan Fugate
NewCath returns to the diamond after an impressive (26-10) season in 2011. The Breds won the 9th Region championship one year ago and ended their season with a loss in the state tournament quarterfinals. They return several key players, which include two of the top 15 players in Northern Kentucky, according to nky.com, including seniors Brady Hightchew (SS) and Nick Woltermann (OF).

CovCath seems to be the favorite to win the 9th Region this year. The Colonels return eight starters after a (28-11) record last season. Some pre-season coaches’ polls have the Colonels ranked among the top 25 teams in Kentucky this year. CovCath may have an edge on the competition with the return of multi-dimensional senior Corey Severson (P/LF).

Ryle finished last season with a (22-10) record. They should compete well in the 9th Region even after losing a hand-full of starters. The main focus on the Raiders, by the spectators at least, is two of Northern Kentucky’s top players. University of Cincinnati signee, Mark Downs (P), and Western Kentucky signee, Leiff Clarkson (SS), will make for some very entertaining Raider's games.

Dixie is looking strong this year, as usual, after completing their 2011 season with a (20-15) record. With a decent amount of starters returning, the Colonels should not have much trouble winning the 34th District for the sixth straight time, playing against struggling teams such as: St. Henry (8-16), Lloyd (14-12), Ludlow (6-11), and Villa Madonna (2-27).

Bishop Brossart is a toss up team for me at this point. They concluded the 2011 season with a good quality (24-13) record. The major blow for the Mustangs this year is losing ten seniors from the past season. Now that statement may make some Brossart fans cringe, however, that might not have as big of an affect as it may seem. According to nky.com, the Mustangs are holding on to THREE of the top 15 players in Northern Kentucky. Trever Bezold (OF), Zach Fardo (P/CF), and Tanner Norton (C) may have what it takes to build Brossart’s program this season and take them to state.

The teams above are five squads that I feel will have an upper-hand on a majority of their competition. That being said, for length purposes, here is just a quick list of a few other teams who, I believe, should have a great season and their 2011 records.
