Two of the top NKY High School baseball teams faced off during a cold windy game this past Saturday. CovCath came into Dixie’s house and prevailed.
After sitting through the first three, somewhat lackluster, innings the game began to get a little more interesting. The CovCath Colonels struck first with a single by Eric Schneider to right-center which scored David Zalla in the top of the 4th. By the end of the 4th inning it was CovCath up 1-0. Dixie was looking down on their luck after giving up another run in the top of the 5th. Ben Maile (DH) drove Tommy Arnzen in from third with a double to right field to build the CovCath lead to 2-0.
Dixie starting pitcher, Parker Stansbury, was pulled in the top of the 5th after giving up the second run for the CovCath Colonels. Stansbury finished with three K’s.
The Colonels gave CovCath a scare in the bottom of the 6th when Clayton McKinney hit a sac-fly to right field with the bases loaded to make the score 2-1. CovCath’s lefty starting pitcher, Corey Severson, held on by forcing the last two outs of the inning to maintain the CovCath lead. Severson did not return after the 6th inning; the lefty threat ended the game with four K’s.
The final inning resembled the first three, unfortunately. While CovCath did allow a hit in the bottom of the 7th, closing pitcher Jimmy Tomlin made it look simple to shut the game out with a final score of 2-1.
These two teams meet next on April 7th 10:00am, at Covington Catholic.
