Falmouth, KY - It was a chilly January night, but the action was heating up inside Pendleton County's high school gym. Tonight's game was between two tough teams. One, a favorite to win the 10th region and the other, a team that has a lot of talent that could vie for a chance to win the 10th. The beginning of the game was all you could ask for, but if you were a Camel fan, you would see the wheels fall off the bus real fast in the second half.
Pendleton County started off the game with an explosive offensive attack. The game started out in favor of the Wildcats 5-0, after Kane Belcher hit for two and Tyler Mains drained a three-pointer. Campbell would come back and score two field goals of their own to get the score to read 5-4. The Camels were missing one thing tonight and that was a post presence. The Cats dominated the post as their center, Pat Elliott, would really hurt the Camels down low. Elliott had a great game and toward the end of the first quarter received a present for one free shot, after the original shot had went in. At that point the score was 11-7, Wildcats. The Camels scoring in the first quarter would be finished off by Sophomore Ryan Eten as he pounded his way into the lane to get the two plus one foul. At the end of the first, Pendleton was in the driver's seat, 14-9.
The second quarter opened up with an Elliott basket with 7:30 on the clock. The Camels very own, Brett White, would get his game started by hitting a jumper to keep the Camels within reach. This would set off a small run by the Camels as they would fight their way back to tie the Wildcats 16-16, the tie happened on a goal tending call that rewarded, Marcus Clines with two. Clines would play a very nice basketball game and would finish the game with 13 points. The rest of the second would be Pat Elliott's, he scored seven within a couple of minutes and made sure that the Wildcats were on top. Campbell County was playing great against their 10th region foe, but soon Pendleton would step their game up a little. The end of the first sixteen minutes of play told us that the Wildcats were ahead, 30-27.
That would not change in the third either. The Wildcats would come out of halftime looking as good as ever. They were led by their guard Tyler Mains and Pat Elliott. They would combine for 13 points in the third quarter. Jon Elrod was the only other scorer in the third for the Wildcats and he hit a three in the beginning of the quarter. The Camels would try to keep up, but after they fell behind after Pendleton's 13-0 run, the game was essentially over. The Camels had no more life in them to be able to come back. The Cats would take a 15-point lead and not look back. Coach Buddy Biggs left his starters in for the remainder of the game, so the Camels had no chance of coming back. Brett White showed some of his brilliance by squeezing into the lane for two of his 14 points on the night for the Camels. The third quarter came to a close and saw Pendleton up on the Camels, 48-35.
The Wildcats would continue their dominance over Campbell in the fourth. However, the fouls in this game were very lopsided, 10-4, as the Camel faithful looking on, sat in anger. Next, it was Tyler Mains that would add seven to his scoring column, as White would add four to his. Campbell received some scoring by Kenny Walker in the fourth and the Wildcats from their forward, Terry Davis who had four in the last quarter of play. The Camels fought hard, but the Wildcats proved to be too tough for them to handle. The final score in this one would be, 63-45 in favor of the black and red. The Wildcats have now beaten the Camels twice in the season and now the only chance for Campbell to get revenge is if they meet Pendleton in the regional finals. It was also Homecoming night for the Wildcats, which made the victory even sweeter tonight.
