9th Region Boys District Tournament Previews
2/16/2013 - by Ryan Roberts

This year's 33rd district tournament will be held at Boone County high school. Here are the dates and match ups:

Monday 2/18 7:00 - Quarter-Finals
Heritage Academy (7-16) v Conner (12-14)
Conner should win this one going away as they are simply bigger, stronger, and overall more talented than Heritage. As Seth Davis would say "Sharpie" Conner in to the semi's to take on the Cooper Jaguars.

Wednesday 2/20 8:00 - Semi Finals
Ryle (12-15) v Boone County (13-15)
This will probably be one of the best first round match ups in the area for the simple fact of how close both games were between these two during the regular season. Ryle swept the district series, but won both games by a combined 3 points. It is extremely tough to defeat a team three times in one season, especially with the third time being in a win or go home situation on that teams' home floor.

Wednesday 2/20 6:00 - Semi Finals
Cooper (21-5) v Conner
This game will almost certainly feature the Jags vs the Conner Cougars. During the regular season, Cooper beat Conner twice by 11 points both times. Cooper is playing extremely well right now and should move on to the 33rd district finals, looking for back to back district titles.

Friday 2/22 7:00- 33rd District Championship
Cooper/Heritage/Conner winner v Ryle/Boone County winner
The 33rd district finals can be seen live on NKYsports.com as it is our Republic Bank Game of the Week. Going on regular season results, one would expect to see a Cooper-Ryle match up. It won't be that easy, though. Ryle and Boone are identical teams, so it will be tough to predict that winner. Ryle is playing much better as of late though with a close loss to Newcath and two wins over Campbell County and Tates Creek. On the other side, Cooper should take care of business and get back to the district finals to defend their crown. I will predict we see Cooper/Ryle for a third time. In the end, it will be all Jags as they advance to the region tournament as District Champions for the 2nd consecutive year.

Prediction: Cooper 64 Ryle 51

34th District Tournament
This years' 34th District Tournament will be held at Ludlow High School. Here are the dates and match ups:

Monday 2/18
7:45: Lloyd Memorial (7-18) v Villa Madonna (16-12)
This will be the opening game of the 34th district tournament with the winner advancing to play Dixie Heights. Despite the difference in records, Lloyd should advance to the next round as they defeated Villa by 18 and 9 during the regular season. It will be a good game, but in the end Lloyd has more depth and talent than the Blue Lightning.

Wednesday 2/20
6:00: Lloyd/Villa Madonna winner v Dixie Heights (15-13)
Dixie beat both teams by 30 or more during the regular season. I don't see a rematch with either being any different. All Colonels Everything as they roll in to the district championship to try and regain 34th district supremacy after being upset by Lloyd in last years' title game.

7:45: St. Henry (9-14) v Ludlow (13-12)
One would think this should be a good first round game, as St. Henry only beat Ludlow by 2 in the regular season meeting. That game was back in the middle of December though and St. Henry has improved by leaps and bounds since then, hence their recent drubbing of a good Newport team. Ludlow will keep it tight early on as they should be fired up playing at home, but St. Henry will pull away throughout.

Friday 2/22
7:00 St. Henry/Ludlow winner v Lloyd/Villa/Dixie winner
This game should get back to what was expected when St. Henry moved over from the 33rd district...Dixie v St. Henry. Dixie knocked off St. Henry by 11 during the regular season but as we have seen in the last decade, you can never count out a Dave Faust coached team in the post season. The biggest difference in the two? Dixie has Brandon Hatton and St. Henry doesn't.

Prediction: Dixie Heights 59 St. Henry 51

35th District Tournament
This years' 35th district will be held at Holmes High School but hosted by Holy Cross High School. Here are the dates and match ups:

Monday 2/18 at Beechwood
7:00 Cov. Latin (9-16) v Beechwood (8-20)
Beechwood knocked off Cov Latin by 19 and 22 points during the regular season. Going with Roll Tigers in the first round match up as Beechwood's record has a lot to do with them moving up to Division II this year in the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference.

Wednesday 2/20
6:30 Holy Cross (16-11) v Covington Catholic (23-6)
It's rare that a first round match up between two teams features two of the top 5 teams in the region, but that is life in the 35th district almost every year. This year is no different. The Colonels have been struggling as of late with Nick Fredrick being injured, while Holy Cross is getting hot at the right time with a home win over Scott County. Covcath beat Holy Cross by 8 during the regular season at home. Some think Holy Cross has the advantage with Fredrick dealing with an injury, but here is something to think about...Fredrick was held to 0 points in the first meeting and Covcath still won. Holy Cross will be looking for their region tournament and district championship appearance since the 03/04 season.

8:00 Holmes (27-1) v Beechwood/Latin winner
Holmes beat Beechwood by 30+ during the regular season...expect the Dogs to advance to their 9th straight district championship and region tournament playing at home.

Friday 2/2:
7:00 Holmes/Beechwood winner v Covcath/Holy Cross winner
Whoever wins the Holy Cross/Covcath game will have an extremely tough match up in the finals, having to play Holmes on their home court for the right to head to Bank of Kentucky Center as district champions. Holmes has won 5 consecutive district championship. Their last loss? Back to back years to Covcath. Holmes beat Covcath by 11 during the regular season at Covcath and beat Holy Cross by 3 at Holmes during the regular season after blowing a 25 point halft time lead.

Prediction: Holmes 61 Covcath 52

36th District Tournament
This years' 36th district tournament will be held at Highlands High School. Here are the dates and match ups:

Monday 2/18
7:45 Dayton (2-22) v Bellevue (13-15)
The river city rivals will meet in the opening round of the district tournament for the right to advance to meet Newport in the semi finals. Bellevue has the better record but only beat Dayton by 3 in both meetings during the regular season. Bellevue should have the advantage and advance to the semi finals but the close meetings during the regular season show that this could possibly go either way.

Tuesday 2/19
7:45 Highlands (12-15) v Newport Catholic (28-2)
The Breds have been one of the most dominant teams in the region since the start of the year. I wouldn't expect much to change in the opening round of the district tournament as Newcath held Highlands to their lowest scoring output of the year in the regular season meeting and beat the Birds by 37.

Wednesday 2/20
7:45 Newport (19-8) v Dayton/Bellevue winner
Newport hasn't played Bellevue but beat Dayton by 40 during the regular season. All Cats Everything regardless of who they play as they roll in to the finals.

Thursday 2/21
7:00 Highlands/Newcath winner v Newport/Bellevue/Dayton winner
Barring a major upset, we should see a rematch of the All A Classic championship that featured Newcath and Newport. Newcath swept the regular season series by 29 and 7 but Newport is a very dangerous team and can't be overlooked. Newport's athletes gave Newcath problems in the All A championship. Breds' size gave Newport fits in the first meeting. Which one wins out this time?

Prediction: Newcath 60 Newport 47

The 9th Region Tournament will be played the following week on the following dates:

Monday 2/25
Quarter-Finals 6:30 and 8:30

Tuesday 2/26
Quarter-Finals 6:30 and 8:30
