Cooper's Defense Continues to Impress in Win Over NCC
8/29/2014 - by Spencer Holland
Defense was once again on display in Union, Kentucky as the Cooper Jaguars defeated the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds 31-0.

The defensive line, led by JR Marcus Watson, controlled the line of scrimmage and held the Thoroughbreds to only 55 total yards in the first half and only145 yards all game. Though the defense has only one returning starter, Watson, they have yet to give up a touchdown in the first two games. Coach Randy Borchers had this to say about his young defense, “We are flying to the ball right now, and really playing as a team. We stress defense all year and we feel like if we want to be good, and want to have a chance of winning the district, we’ve got to play good defense.

On the offensive side of the ball there wasn’t much going on until Cooper senior QB Billy Prickett connected with JR wideout Chad Michels on a 49 yard touchdown with 49 seconds left in the first quarter. Cooper then got good field position at NewCath’s 30 yard line after JR Cole Hicks’ interception at the 5:50 mark in the second quarter.

Cooper would execute with the first redzone opportunity for either team, at 4:13 left in the first half, with a five yard touchdown pass from Prickett to SO receiver Dante Hendrix, making the score 14-0. Cooper wasn't quite finished. After another interception by Cooper’s defense, this time by JR Justin Parks, Torrey Cordell-Armstrong would break loose for 70 of his 136 yards to the 10 yard line with only 2 seconds to spare in the first half.

Sophomore kicker Micthell Hollifield would come in to nail the 27 yard kick and end the first half 17-0 Cooper. New Cath’s offensive woes continued in the second half only producing three first downs and failing to move the ball inside the red zone the entire game. Coopers offense continued to beat down on an overmatched and tired NewCath defense to a final score of 31-0.

Play of the Game: With the score 14-0 and the NewCath offense threatening to score, Justin Parks intercepted an Anderson throw in the end zone to give Cooper the ball with 1:03 left in the first half.

Player of the Game: Cooper’s defensive line. They harassed Anderson all night long and forced two interceptions that resulted in Cooper scores.
