OMEGA Processing Game of the Week
11/13/2014 - by NKS Editor
The OMEGA Processing Game of the Week webcast features Lloyd (8-2) vs. Newport Central Catholic (5-5) in the second round of the Class 2A football playoffs.

Lloyd defeated Carroll County 54-32 in the first round of the playoffs last week while NewCath beat Trimble County 43-0. These two teams faced each other earlier in the season (Sep 26), and the Breds won 28-0. Since 2007, NewCath is 10-0 against Lloyd.

For Lloyd to have a chance to win they must stop NewCath’s main offensive threat, Jacob Smith. The Junior RB has 956 yards rushing, 15 rush TD’s, 361 receiving yards and 3 receiving TD’s. Sophomore QB Patrick Henschen has also had a good year completing 65% of his passes throwing for 1,142 yards and 8 TD’s in his first year as a varsity QB.

Lloyd also has some offensive threats the Breds must key on starting with Sophomore RB Justin Durham who has rushed for 913 yards and 18 TD’s. Senior QB Hayden Molitor has completed 67% of his passes for 1,373 yards and 14 TD’s. His main target is Junior WR Charles Gaines who has 40 catches for 558 yards and 6 TD’s.

Here's a quick look at the other games going on this weekend:

Paris (9-2) at Beechwood (9-2)
Paris might be 9-2 but that’s soon to be 9-3. Beechwood lost their first 2 games of the season to Mount Healthy and Dixie, then won their next 9 games, including wins over CovCath and NewCath. The Tigers beat Paris last year in the playoffs 47-3 and look for them to continue their winning ways.

Bellevue (7-4) at Frankfort (9-2)
Both teams have won big over weaker opponents and this should be an interesting game to watch. Frankfort defeated Dayton last week 48-0 while Bellevue beat Eminence 61-12. Bellevue likes to throw the ball and if it’s not raining look for Bellevue to come out with a win. The Tigers lost at Frankfort last year 24-14.

Newport (7-4) at Walton-Verona (10-1)
Walton-Verona’s only loss was to Newport in Week 2 (36-26). That game went back-and-forth and was a great game to watch as it was part of our OMEGA Processing Game of the Week webcast that week. Both teams have been playing very well. Newport must stop NKY’s top rusher, Mason Compton, who leads the region with 1,420 yards and 23 TD’s.

Ashland Blazer (6-4) at Highlands (9-2)
Highlands defeated Boyd County last week 44-7 and now host Ashland Blazer who beat Holmes last week 49-14. Highlands has beaten the Tomcats the past two years by an average score of 54-10. The Bluebirds have the top passer in NKY in Beau Hoge who has thrown for 2,667 yards and 30 TD’s. WR Alex Veneman also leads NKY in receiving with 73 catches, 1,344 yards and 20 TD’s.

CovCath (7-4) at Johnson Central (11-0)
CovCath has won 4 straight and is starting to get a little bit healthier but will it be enough to beat the undefeated Golden Eagles. Since 2005, CovCath is 3-2 against Johnson Central and won at JC last year 42-12.

Cooper (7-4) at Franklin County (8-2)
Cooper defeated Woodford County last week 31-7, a team Franklin County only beat 14-6. Nonetheless, this will still be a tough road game for the Jaguars who have only won 2 road games this season. Cooper will rely on their leading rusher, Torey Cordell-Armstrong who has run for 1,230 yards (#3 in NKY) and 10 TD’s.

Ryle (5-6) at Dixie (10-1)
Even though Ryle has a losing record they have own 4 of their last 5 games. That one loss came to Dixie 3 weeks ago and now the two teams will face-off again. Ryle defeated George Rogers Clark last week 28-14 while Dixie took care of Tates Creek 46-18. For Ryle to win, they must stop Dixie QB Drew Moore who has run for over 1,000 yards and thrown for over 1,000 yards and combined for 27 TD’s.

Simon Kenton (10-1) at Lafayette (8-3)
Simon Kenton beat Madison Central last week 40-11 while Lafayette defeated Campbell County 35-21. The Pioneers’ only loss is to Dixie this year and they should come be coming back to NKY with a win after this game. These two teams last played in 2008 and Simon Kenton won 33-6.
