The Newport Central Catholic Lady Breds (16-9) gave another top team in the region all they could handle last night but couldn’t get over the hump, falling to Holy Cross 58-51.
Holy Cross (23-3) jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead and held New Cath scoreless until midway through the first quarter. The game stayed tight throughout the first half and for part of the second. NewCath went into the locker room down five points at the break and closed the gap to three in the third quarter, but couldn't get any closer.
Holy Cross was led by senior forward Ally Mayhaus with 24 points and Deja Turner who finished with 17. The Lady Breds had two in double figures - senior guard Michaela Ware and junior guard Ansley Davenport – who scored 15 apiece.
At halftime, the '75-'76 Holy Cross girls basketball team was honored for playing in the 1976 state tournament.
Next up for New Cath is a game against St. Henry (13-13), while the Indians head to Independence (KY) to take on a tough Simon Kenton (21-3) team.
