The final The River City News/NKYsports.com Top-5 boys basketbal poll of the regular season shows a change from last week after top dog Covington Catholic was taken out by Dixie at The Bank of Kentucky Center last Friday night.
NewCath now sits at the number one spot while CovCath falls to third. Dixie is now second for the first time this season.
Many games were cancelled this week thanks to the cold and snow the region experienced.
District tournament play starts next week.
Newport Central Catholic (25-3): NewCath reclaimed top billing after edging Holmes, 58-52, at The Bank of Kentucky Center on Friday night. It was the thirteenth win in a row for the Thoroughbreds and they have now won 19 or their last 20 games. NCC avoided the other major test on its schedule when a home game against Louisville Trinity was canceled due to the the snowstorm Northern Kentucky experienced on Monday night.
Dixie (19-7): Dixie has shot up the charts after a very strong weekend beginning with a signature win over then top-ranked Covington Catholic at The Bank of Kentucky Center, followed by a rout of Scott in Taylor Mill the next day. The Colonels have shown that they have both the size with their tall front court players and the scoring ability with senior guard Austin Schrek fearlessly attacking the rim.
