Campbell County Crushes Scott in District Championship Game
Jason Finnell - The River City News
Early in the fourth quarter, Scott received a technical foul for substituting a player into the game that was not listed in the official scorer’s book; an unusual scenario describing the kind of night it was for the Eagles’ on the court. Or maybe more specifically, the night that wasn’t.

From the opening tip, Campbell County dominated Scott in every facet of the game, winning the 37th District Championship, 70-26, on its home floor Friday night. Following early baskets by each team, things quickly turned chippy. Scott’s Jake Ohmer and Campbell County’s Deondre Jackson began jawing at one another, having to be separated by the referee before things could escalate. When cooler heads prevailed, the Camels’ never looked back.

On the strength of two consecutive three-point field goals by junior guard Trent Mcgovney, Campbell County jumped out to a 10-2 lead, and the Eagles’ called timeout. After a Blake Schneider basket, Scott did not score again until the beginning of the second quarter, due in part to the defense of tournament Most Valuable Player, junior center Matt Wilson, whom had several blocked shots by the completion of the first period. The Camels’ led 18-4 at the conclusion of the first.

Wilson began the second with a dunk, followed by Mcgovney’s third three of the night to give the Camels’ a 27-6 lead. The Eagles’ couldn’t muster much offense but ended their drought momentarily when Jackson was fouled shooting a desperation three with one second left in the quarter. Converting three free throws, the Camels’ led at the break, 50-18.

Unable to defend the size and strength of Wilson inside the lane, the junior scored at-will and converted from the line on his way to a team-high 18 points. As the game grew increasingly out-of-hand, tempers flared once again. Eagles’ senior guard Darian Witherspoon was given a technical after arguing with the referee over a perceived bad call.
