Bellevue High School has named Woody McMillan as its new head football coach. Bellevue Athletic Director Jim Hicks confirmed the hire during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon.
McMillan started the football program at Walton-Verona in 2006 and worked at the school for 12 years. Since its inception, Walton-Verona football has gone 51-29.
McMillan is a Ludlow graduate and has experience coaching high school basketball and baseball to go along with his football coaching accolades.
“He was the head coach for a couple of years at Walton-Verona and he had to resign for personal reasons, but he is an excellent teacher. He was looking to be a head coach again and he ended up being a great fit for us,” Hicks said.
The Tigers went 7-5 last year and made it to the second round of the playoffs before losing to Frankfort, 50-12. McMillan replaces Johnny Poynter who ran a pass-first scheme at Bellevue. Hicks expects McMillan to adapt to his new players before emphasizing a new scheme.
“The last couple of years we have been very pass happy and I think once he gets in here and meets all the kids and personnel, he will adapt to what they do well,” Hicks said. “So it all depends on how he sees them as a fit.”
Bellevue is Class 1A - District 3 with Beechwood, Dayton and Ludlow. The season begins in August.
